Hardly ever left pleco caves, especially when lights were on. 20 gal long, substrate was half smooth gravel and half carib sea super naturals premium aquarium sand. ~81ºF. Rocks (shale), driftwood, small pleco caves. Aquaclear 20 HOB filter. Sparsely planted tank. Co-inhabitants: reed tetras, snails, red cherry shrimp, 1 dwarf pea puffer (non-agreesive, never interacted with the plecos). Never came out to eat while lights were on. Fed frozen foods (adult brine, blood worms) or sinking pellets. Current set up: This is a well-established tank (set up ~2 years prior to writing this) that they were moved into around 2 months prior to me writing this. Immediately after moving them to this tank, they became way more active at all hours, they explore the tank frequently, and can often be seen sitting out on rocks and drift wood. Still shy when disturbed but they come out to eat when fed. Not sure exactly what caused this incredible change in behaviour so sharing all the details of the new set up, since they seem much happier now and are much more enjoyable to watch since they no longer hide all the time. 35 gallon tank (15x15x38"), aquaclear 50 HOB filter. ~79ºF. Substrate is carib sea super naturals premium aquarium sand. Moderately densely planted tank. Exact same shale rocks and pleco cave arrangement from previous set-up. Same food/feeding routine as old set-up, except also have access to eat sinking algae wafers and spirulina flakes now. Cohabitants: 2 honey gouramis, sterbai corydoras, hill stream loach. Temperature, water current, water parameters (KH, GH, pH, Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia), and brightness are all unchanged. Some might assume that the absence of the pea puffer would explain the change in behaviour, however the pea puffer never interacted with the plecos and was a later addition to the tank (the plecos were shy before the pea puffer was added). Notable differences between previous and new set up: slightly deeper tank, more plants, all sand (no gravel) -they are often seen digging in the sand by rapidly waving their tails-, more bottom dwellers sharing the space in new set up. More carpeting plants (dwarf sagitarius). Was considering selling these when breaking down the old set up, but instead decided to move them into my main display tank. Rediscovered a new love for these fish, since they are now active and more visible." |
