Corys love fast flowing water, I use external filter AND internal filter because external has high filtering capacity and internal filters keep the water circulating rapidly.

Remember to cover your tank, Corys keep coming to surface to take up air and may do it so fast that they accidentally end ...

My advice is start medicating straight away but be careful about the dosage, you may wanna try half-dosage first. Since the water is so hard, you may experience some difficulties in lowering the pH though. The harder the water, the more it's buffered against changes in pH
So the idea of trying to obtain soft water is good and should help you to lower the pH too.. .
