Roadside Bagrus

Post by Shane »

Stopped and snapped these just outside of Jinja on the banks of the Nile. The fishmonger insisted that the Clarias was a lungfish. Not sure if that means that locally Clarias are not distinguished from lungfish or if he was just trying to get a higher price from a Mzungu as lungfish are a delicacy.
I pointed out I was after live fish and he threw water on the Clarias (which immediately started squirming) and suggested I take it. Most of the bagrids were still showing life signs, but I doubt they would recover if placed in an aquaria.

, I think. The Clarias should be , or if you believe that what is now C. gariepinus should consist of more than one species, then the name C. lazera should be used. There is also a possibility that it is C. anguillaris, but you'd have to count gill rakers to be sure.

Wow, what are the Catfish in the 2nd picture?
4 of them together?

They look like a species of Hemibagrus ??

Always a shame to see fish still breathing on a Table :(

I think this is often done (possibly keeping them in water) to keep them as fresh as possible, some cultures like to personally chose the live animal when out "shopping".
