Spell check

Post by geminiluna »

As I type in this text screen, I'll get a broken red line under a word that is spelled incorrectly as my prompt to fix it. Is that 'dictionary' somehow linked to my computer OS, or to my browser, or to some text editor that I can control, or is that dictionary linked to the PlanetCatfish site?

The reason I ask is that when typing the scientific names that are so common for us here, I get the broken red lines even when I spell them correctly. On every one I've tried to type, the broken red line in this text box tells me it's spelled incorrectly: Baryancistrus, Peckoltia, Leporacanthicus ... If it's a PlanetCatfish site dictionary driving this, can the scientific names be added? If it's my computer/browser driving the recognition, I'll see if I can figure out how to add the scientific names to the dictionary.

It is not under Planet Catfish's control. It is most likely part of your browser, but technically, it could be elsewhere (in the OS itself).

Thanks, Mats! I'll have my husband look into it (thankfully he's a career IT guru) and see what can be done. Otherwise, I'll continue to come up with the most imaginative spelling variations and just imagine the experts rolling their eyes every time I post! :-)

For the Peckoltia, etc, usually, if you right-click on misspelled word, it has an option for "add to dictionary" or similar. If you are sure it's spelled correctly, then add it, and it won't show you it as wrong.

Spellchecking is an addon/extension function of the browser. If find the best one is firefox. Other than that the posts above cover it all - it's nothing the site can control.

There's no need to have to guess from memory!

The easiest way to make sure you've spelt something right is just to copy the name complete with clog tags directly from the cat-log. Most species can be found easily and quickly using the quick-find feature, and then opened in a new tab with either a right click or a ctrl+ left click. This takes a few seconds!

I believe this knowledge is not known by many people but it is a very handy feature. I stumbled across it almost six years ago and by then I had only owned my first PC for a little more than 8 months.

There are many little short cuts and convenient techniques which very few know all of them.
David Pogue, IT/Tech writer for the NYT has been gradually accumulating a list of techniques like these that help users.

It seems to be a peculiarity of PC makers to assume so much is common knowledge that they provide little information with the machines. This set of circumstances prompted David Pogue to begin writing user guides for many OS and devices; his books are a series with titles like Windows 7, the Missing Manual, The Book that Should Have Come In the Box.
