synos and nitrofurazone
Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding medication in a tank with some syno cats in it. One of the fish in the tank has what is clearly columnaris and I would like to treat the whole tank( I work in a big hotel and this tank is filled with fish no one wanted, they know I have fish and I can't say no as In most cases the fish would be flushed so the tank is filled with misc tetras, corys, gourami, you name it, and for some reason it works out okay, no one bullies anyone else.
The 2 synos in the tank are clearly hybrids but I believe that they still have a right to life. (let's not get into it right now) The medication I wand to use is furan-2 (nitrofurazone) and the question is: Is it safe to use with synos and cory cats?
thanks and all have a great new year!!!!

Re: synos and nitrofurazone
Although I haven't used this meds, synos are generally tough so I personally wouldn't worry about the synod, the other fish I could not say. Once synos do start to suffer they can be hard & slow to bring back to full health if disease has a strong hold on them

Re: synos and nitrofurazone
Are you sure of the diagnosis? Red, moving worms sticking out of the anus?
AFAIK, fenbendazole is the best against columnaris. Not first hand. I read very well-written accounts of those who battled this nightmarish, hard to kill parasite.
Nitrofurazone is an anti-biotic and that was the only way I've ever used it. I am not aware of its anti-parasitic properties, if any.
As for the direct answer, my synos have never shown any special adverse reaction to the bifuran anti-biotic - nitrofurazone : furazolidone, 2:1.

Re: synos and nitrofurazone
Columnaris is a gram negative aerobic bacterial infection, kind of looks like fungus. it's often found in the fish's gills. It's pretty difficult to treat once is has a hold. It's more the rest of the fish in the tank I'm concerning myself with. I'm not sure what disease you have in mind

Re: synos and nitrofurazone
Yeah, sorry about that. I mixed up columnaris with the callamanus worms. Scratch my post except for the last bit. As synos, my cories (had only a few kinds) have not shown any special adverse reaction to nitrofurazone either, IIRC.
