On a sidenote:
I've found Tetranematichthys on a German stocklist.

And because they are too small, they went into the small tank. Where they have completely vanished of course.
On the other hand, the large tank is not very quiet atm, as the Guianacara decided to spawn today, one Ageneiosus sp 3 is acting strangly and one Triportheus rotundatus has a severely damaged pectoral.
So maybe it's a good thing these 3 small atronasus didn't go in there straight away.

General remark: although no longer extremely triggered by listings of small auchenipterids, I get the feeling now and again that I've made the wrong choice by getting rid of the larger species and keeping the medium ones. The above list containing Tetranematichthys and the fact that there's still one A. marmoratus available in the Netherlands don't actually help much in getting rid of that feeling.....

i think you're wrong on keeping yourself worried by this

the bigger species would require a complete overhaul of the tank, if you wanted to keep several or least 1 pair of the marmoratus

not at least, because Ageneiosus marmoratus and Tetranematichthys wouldn't co-exist in the same tank!

this because they are probably really bad food competitors, but also:
the marmoratus will need open swimming space as well as shaded open ground space; the Tetranematichthys will need a densely planted tank with medium or large Amazon Swords to rest in.

you cannot have both: an open tank with swimming space and shaded open sandy areas under wood where such a large fish can rest (in a group!) and the dense bushes needed for the other species

so, you still could only keep 1 species.

also: getting rid of all those "driftwoods" wasn't a bad decision either; apart from the fisheri, the other species are gluttons and quite disruptive; they wouldn't be good tankmates for medium/small Agen eiosus at all in the long run.

and if you ever wanted fisheri again, I'm sure you and Bijn could make such a deal that each of you end up with 1 pair.
it's also by far the best looking "Driftwood" and also the most mellow.

As stated, it was a general remark. I am aware of the fact that these larger species can't be combined easily in my tank, but the fact that they pop up on stocklists after I made a decision is somewhat disappointing imo. Perhaps not so much regarding A. marmoratus, but Tetranematichthys still has a soft spot. Keeping smaller species rules out keeping Tetranematichthys, no doubt about that. So I'll happily continue keeping my current stock.
But - as you may recognize from your Madagascar era - sometimes these stocklists "hurt".
That's all there's to it.


@ Arjan: the Guianacara were no match for my woodcats as the nest has completely vanished overnight.....
Have yet to see the 3 atronasus; will start looking seriously tomorrow when all Cryptos will be put in the sand.

well, I'm still IN my Madagascar era, and the stocklists hurt "the other way", as in: it's not there!

there's a whole list of species available in the US, but in Europe it's nothing, nothing and more nothing.....

it's like ageneiosus 20 years ago. they're simply not around anywhere......
no Katria katria, no Paretroplus kieneri, no Paretroplus nourissatti of decent quality, no Bedotia's save inbred geayi (madagascariensis), no Pachypanchax from the Madagascar species, and don't get me started on catfishes

it would be nice to think that anywhere, even in Italy or France or Greece there would be a few, but they're not there.

They are from the river piamotes and informed opinion says they are glanidium

That's exacty how they look Marc, gold and brown but with more striped pattern.
However Steve (the dim one may be right... Ingo also reckons they are a tatia

I take it this one was freshly caught, hence the abundant yellow glow (which sadly disappears most of the time once kept in a tank); that is most likely the reason the patterning is less visible in this picture.

Nice fish; this one was once listed as Tatia (Tayta) sp. tijera.


On a side note: does the "Doyle" refer to Arthur Conan and are you thus calling Steve a barbarian?

As a matter of fact I called them yesterday about the list.
The phone was bussy but a few hours later the shopowner called me back. ( ! )
She told me that they not only stock shops in Germany and Holland but also sell and send fish to
private persons. 40 Euros per box.

That could be a very interesting option!
On the minus side you won't be able to see the shop, but on the plus side you don't have to sit in the car the whole day and with the current petrol prices 40 euros a box is a give away, sort of. Even more when you're able to share that cost.

The reason I called was sheer curiosity about the number and price of Tetranematichthys.
I had to send an e-mail, which I did, and they would check it today.

If you want to get rid of the Loreto tetras and the small Guianacaras without having to catch them yourself it is .
