Hello. I'm new to this sight. I've been researching my new cats that I got and came across this web sight. I bought these fish as Synodontis petricola. It sounds like, the more I read, that I think they are Synodontis lucipinnis. They are 2" right now. When they talk about the clear window in their rayed fins. Are they talking about the clear portion that is on the dorsal fin? Also, does anyone have a rough idea of the age these would be? I would like to keep a rough record on them incase I can get them to spawn. I think I got a pretty good deal on these guys. I gave $35. for 7 of them @ 2." Any advice would be appreciated

The tail portion looks skinned in the photo. But, they look fine under regular light. Where there is lack of black spots, the body looks a little translucent.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

These are Lucipinnis.

They were only scientifically described in Dec '06 and were previously known as "petricola dwarf". In 99% of stores they are still labelled as petricola.

Thanks for the replies. Here are a couple better photos. It seams they don't mind the camera when they're feeding in the morning.

True petricola are "expensive" - here in the uk they range from £40.00 - £60.00 each (approx)

Lucipinnis can be had for as little as £4.00 if you are clever & shop around, certainly less than a tenner!

When Lucipinnis are sold on as petricola in genuine error the price is often inflated. Add in the newish described ilebrevis & there is a LOT of confusion! (Don't even mention confusion with polli etc......)
