Hi,

I have a chance of picking up some of these guys but would really what to ask a couple of questions

1. They are going in a 6ft tank is 3 two many. I have heard they are very aggressive

2. I currently have some Synodontis Lucipinnis would these need to be moved on ?

Granny's are a bit of an enigma in terms of providing consistant advice on how many can be kept together in what size tank. 3 might be kept successfully in a six foot...

They can at times be highly aggressive to each other. I have seen on occasion a dominant individual rip others to pieces. It seems to be dependant somewhat on what sex the dominant individual is (females seem more aggressive) & perhaps (although this is only a theory) if they are wild caught or tank bred.

The lucipinnis can stay without any worries, but if you are going for more than one Granny (but definately not 2) you'll need loads of caves & areas of concealment so they can't find each other. I have seen a holding tank with about 8-10 in without problems but what has happened here is the "mbuna effect" where they are kept crowded & there seems to be an armed truce as aggression is spread.

Are these w/c fish & where are they coming from? (just interested if it is the same place i'm thinking of)

Yes i know the chap - these are some of the original f1's from Neil Hardy i think (he is selling on behalf of someone who used to post here a lot). They are cheaper now than when they were first purchased!!!

Stuck a down payment on them so hoepfully pick them up soon !

I purchased two S. Granulosus that were living together in a 125 gal long for several years.

I placed them in a 120 Gal with a colony of small Frontosa. I had many caves and niches for them to hide. There was some initial aggression and about four months later, the larger of the two went after the smaller one. A torn dorsal and some scratches prompted me to separate them. They actually had no interest in the other 6 syno's in the tank so the aggression appears to be species specific from my observation.

The bullied fish thrived in its own tank and the other fish one day was found dead. I have no idea on the actual age of the fish as they were in the shop for several years.

I've kept many species of Syno's and I've never seen the level of aggression that Granulosus are capable of. I've wanted to own one for over twenty years and for a point in time I had two. They are an amazing fish so good luck with your quest.

I saw my first granulosus in the flesh a few days ago, very nice indeed and not a bad price I thought at £255 each.

Yikes - that seems a little pricey!

I guess that price may be good or bad, depending on the size and condition of the fish - it is a lot of money for a fish, but just looking at the pictures of them, they are splendid fish.

Well i am now the proud owner of these fish , they have settled in very well . They are made up of 2 x F1 and 1 Wild . Very active and they dwarf my lucipinnis. I will try to get some pictures but they are very active at the minute !

Indeed - in real life, rather than a picture, they are truly something special.

Managed to get some very bad photo's of these guys. The largest is around 7" and the smallest about 5" . NO obvious signs of agression between the three but there are plenty of places to hide

nice! Can you post a pic of the entire tank? I'd like to see how much cover you are giving them. I have two males in separate tanks and am on the look out for more.
