African shovelnose?

Can anyone be more detailed about a "African shovelnose"? Saw one in lfs. Small, dark brown and black. Looked similar colours to a hara. Definitely had shovel shape face but isn't listed under shovelnose when I searched. Perhaps the juvenile changes colour when older? Any ideas? Thanks

This is what i've seen them labelled as previously but might not necessarily be the case. This is always a problem when using "generic" common names

Check cat-e-log for pics & let us know

A pic would go very far for your own purposes and for those of us who are curious.

Never heard of African Shovelnose. (Perhaps, Balaji on a visit to Zimbabwe?)**

(** Balaji is our Indian friend aka Shovelnose at PlanetCatfish)

Can you suggest what a reasonable price is for one?
They were about 3"

I would have thought that they aren't very expensive - £10, give or take... But I've not seen one. They are, apparently, not very rare in nature, so it's more a case of getting them from Africa to here that is the problem.

This is one fish that price varies considerably IME at LFS.

I've seen them under a tenner (as Mats has cited) but i've also seen them over 3 times that for a similar fish, so the answer must be, it depends on where you go....

I've bought 3 C. ornatus from Shark Aquarium (greater NYC) for ~$33 each at ~5". A couple of months back.

Thanks again,

I think they were around £14 but the shop is either very expensive or very cheap after misidentifying the fish... was kind of hoping the latter would be true and I could snatch another bargain from them as they were pretty useless at giving me any info on the fish!

I got some Corydoras davidsandsi as Metae at £4 a fish from these guys!

Its also very interesting to see another local garden centre with a tiger shovelnose in but they have cunningly scribbled out the max size on the info card! Muppets! They'll do anything to see the fish!
