Trying to find a truly bizarre species

I saw a video and some notes about this species in a research paper a few years ago but I can't remember what they were called, if anyone can help that would be great because I really would like to find some. Here is what I remember about them:

They were a mid/top water swimmer
They seemed to be a schooling catfish
They had some kind of brownish, mottled appearance
They swam in a jerky fashion that was really odd
They had a freaky looking face with long whiskers, they sort of reminded me of hagfish
They were from South America
They only reached perhaps 4-5 inches in length

I've looked and looked but I can't find them since that research paper and one video of them in an aquarium. If anyone has any clues of what they might have been it would be very much appreciated if you could share them.

Have you taken a look at the parasitic catfishes of the genus ? Just a blind guess, but your description reminded me of them.

Any memories of the video and research paper sources?
