Hi!

Yes ive heard of it a couple of times. Seems to be a regular fish in some parts of germany. Never seen one though. It seems to be related to the blue eyed L144 type.

Hi!

It pretty must be the normal population color of L144,
L144 (the Xanto blue eye) aquarium population was fix with just 1 specimen importated and colored that way.... so it is pretty likely if you find a brown yellow eyes Ancistrus that it is a Ancistrus L144 with its normal coloration...

Cheers

Yann: I don't actually own this fish,(though I own several like it without the "blue eyes") a friend of mine has it cleaning one of his discus tanks...It was bought as a "wild bristlenose"...

Everyone I''ve spoken with since posting the pictures seems to think that the eyes are "cloudy" and it's sick or old...that being said, would you really want to post a picture of a sick fish in the "cat-elog"?? or do you think otherwise as far as it being sick??

Hi!

Don't know if she sick, the flash could have cause that look.

A profile picture would be better...without flash if possible

Cheers

Yann,
The way the eyes look in the present pictures is pretty representative of what they look like...That being said, I appreciate the reply, and i'll try to get some more pictures(profile with no flash)

Hi!

Since this fish has appeared in a couple of countries i dont think that its sick...or its a widespread eye desease that makes people believe they are blue...but i trust your judgement that this was ruled out.

well, unfortunately I'm the only one that seems to believe that the eyes are blue...other than possibly Yann
I'll take some more pictures today when I'm over taking care of my buddy's tanks...I don't trust my judgement as far as discerning btwn the eyes being blue vs. the eyes being cloudy-I figured that cloudy eyes would be white-cloudy, not blue-cloudy...thanks for the response, david

Pardon me if this post goes wrong as it is my first one....

I bought an adult bristlenose pair at a LFS in Manila - and at least the female seems to have blue eyes (see pic). I'll check the male once he comes out of the breeding cave.

David (and others),
This is a common condition that occurs when exporters over medicate. I have seen it several times in several spp. I am not sure what the exact medication is (not sure the exporters know either), but I can try to find out. It is some "general tonic" medication used in Colombia. If loricariids are given too high of a dose, their eyes are "bleached" blue. I believe it produces some type of cataract when the eye, after having been burned by the medication, heals. My guess is that the fish is not blind, but has reduced vision. On the positive side, survivors do just as well as any other fish as catfishes have such keen other senses to get them around. This why several people have seen the same condition in different individuals of the same sp.

Hi!

I still find it weird that i only have heard this from Ancistrus ssp....a fish youd think isnt imported very often these days.

and what do you think about this male Ancistrus with blue ring in his eye? is a brown L144? an hybrid with L144 involved?

Image

according to the owner of the fish it produces amelanistic fry:

It seems that this has been forgotten for 3 years, but here another individual with a similar blue ring found in a LFS in A Coruña (Spain):

(the photograph is from a Spanish forum colleague)

Is it a damaged eye? is fixed the origin of this blue eye strain?

I think it might be methylene blue.
