Gosh darn it! I had never heard of congo tetras until now, but having looked at pictures, they are suddenly a must-have!

I am reluctantly thinking that I may NOT have room for UDCs, congo tetras, AND glass catfish -- given that I want good-sized schools for each. What do you think?

Assuming a 120 ...

Upside-Down Cat tankmates?

I am thinking of putting a large group of S. nigriventris in a 120 gallon tank. What else can I put with them? I was thinking of S. eupterus, if the groups would be compatible; but I am also toying with the idea of something colorful, or, something big.

I'm not dead set on a biotope tank but I'm ...

I heard 3 weeks is enough for female to spawn again (if the feeding is good)...

That's what I expected... apparently Lady Longfin disagrees. There are no other suspects -- she was the only female Ancistrus of any sort in the tank.

Pity, since I was counting on her inability to spawn again right ...

Bristlenose breeding -- frequency

Everything newbies are told about the ease of breeding the common bristlenose is true. When provided with a suitable cave (I thought I was just putting in some nice rocks, but a hole in the rock suits as a breeding cave), my male albino bristlenose has presented us with four broods to date.

Here's ...

Neon banjo. :-)

I'm falling off my chair thinking about this one!

It would actually be perfect for a tank with brightly colored smooth gravel and a forest of fake plants in neon colors. Don't forget the agate boulder, or perhaps some of the flashier plastic aquarium ornaments would suit this ...

I, too, am wondering if this would be a paradise for our bottom-loving catfish and loaches, or if they wouldn't stir things up too much.

Joist.

Air tubing can be at fault for a drained tank. When you set up again, use a check valve. AND a pump higher than the tank. In fact, I think I'm going to go move some air pumps of my own now!

And... sorry about the fish. :(

The whole episode reminds me somewhat of one of those monster movies where the monster is taken to the nearest big city of the time to be put on display. Sadly this one didn't wipe out half the city and return to the dark deep depths.

Fair enough if they were going to eat it, but they didn't need ...

IMNSHO it would be MUCH cooler to go SCUBA diving in that lake and handfeed and film those beasties instead of pester and exhaust them with hooks and all.

Looking at the wels, though, I wonder exactly what "handfeeding" would amount to with that species. As in, will the fish eat your hand? :lol ...

The A. claro do fine for me at 78-80 degrees, moderate flow with good oxygenation and regular water changes. Your tap water there is very hard, isn't it? I wouldn't worry about it at first, but if you notice you're having low hatch rates, you might consider using RO water in a 1/2 and 1/2 mix ...

Catfish that will survive your winters (even with a pond deicer, which is a good idea and keeps the pond from totally freezing over) are not going to be algae eaters.

That doesn't mean that a couple of catfish couldn't be a neat addition to the pond; they just won't solve your algae problems. Koi ...

Setup for L260 (Hypancistrus sp. Queen Arabesque)

I've always planned to move my two (HOPEFULLY M and F, only time will tell) QAs into their own tank. Now that I'm actually setting up a small tank for the Ancistrus claro, I ought to start thinking about this, the neighboring tank.

I'd like to use a 20 or 25 gallon tank, floor space 12" X 24" (very ...

Setup for A. claro (LDA08, Gold Marble Bristlenose)

It looks as though I will be able to get a mail-order bride for Carlo the claro! Woo-hoo!!

So it's time to set up a species tank just for these little gems. I have been looking at 25 gallon tanks on special at the local PetCo; floor space about 12" X 24" (roughly 30cm X 60cm). I was thinking of ...

Albino Ancistrus kittens!!

Back at the end of April, I posted about "dwarf albino bristlenose?" because my male albino, not yet at the 5" mature size, had been foolin' around with a female and was hunkered in a cave fanning his fins.

I didn't expect it to work out, him being a teenaged dad and all. But we have itty bitty ...

Dwarf Albino Bristlenose

Last year I picked up a group of albino bristlenoses, and they were either lablelled "dwarf" or someone made that claim (AS auction last April). I read up on bristlenoses here and thought I had common, garden variety albino bristlenose, Ancistrus sp. not really identified.

After a year, the largest ...

Fancy goldfish tend to do better in warmer water, actually -- somewhere in the mid to high seventies, Fahrenheit. If the temperature is raised gradually, this tank can be kept at 78F. Startrbear will have less chance of bouyancy issues with the fancier goldies at this temperature, too.
