Will the REAL Synodontis njassee rise? Big pics!!

Post by Sid Guppy »

Went to the LFS, and next to a tremendous challenge in NOT bying fish (I've got too many already, and if I start on Malawians too...)
There was a tank full of genuine S njassee. They didn't look ANYTHING like the pics from the cat-e-log, however!
So there's the rub: real or not?

So the main question is: bogus or the real thing? If they ARE the real thing, the Cat-e-log needs a redo on this one....

Those are the real njassae. The Cat-eLog is wrong. Actually, the fish in the Cat-eLog look like fat nigritas.

In that case, I'll send the whole batch unedited (these were edited) to Jools for the Cat-e-log!
He can put them to good use!

They were made by me, so no problems on copyright etc

Yep, those look like real S. nyassae all right! I have only seen them maybe 2-3 times in LFS. How much were they selling for? Why not pick up a couple and put them in with your Tanganyika fish?

Yes, DO send them to Jools for the C-Log. Speaking of submitting photos to the C-Log, maybe this is not for me to say, but almost everybody who submits pix to the C-Log does so under their real name even if they use a pseudonym on the Forum.

The species name should be spelled njassae, Lake Njassa being the former name of Lake Malawi in German East Africa. The species was described with Nyasa (Njassa) spelled the German way (with a j instead of a y).
According to the rules of nomenclature, the original spelling of a name generally cannot be amended (unless under special circumstances). So it is njassae, not nyassae.

OK! nJassee...
just corrected it.

Dinyar, believe me, I was tempted alright!!!
They were 27,50 Euro a piece, wich might not sound too much, but buying a group of 4 is still about 1/14 of a months' paycheck.
I'm not so rich, and the tanks are fairly full! I need to get rid of 12 Astatotilapia burtoni, 5 Panaque LDA01's and maybe 4 Betta picta's first; then next week the Tangtank gets added 2 Julidochromis transcriptus Gombe, 2 Eretmodus cyanostictus and 5 Labrochromis ishmaeli.
And there's a fosterchild arriving too next week; a 19 year old Panaque suttonorum.

So I'll keep a lid on getting more Syno's for now.....

Actually I went there to take pics (wich succeeded :P ) and check if in the batch of Lophio's perhaps contained a male cyclurus (I got a lone female of that species). But all their Lophio's were the same as my "brevispinus"; wich I already have enough. The Phyllo's were all sold out, and even their petricola's were running low.

I was nicely surprised by those njassees, but there were more nice cats around....Agamyxis pectinifrons, Platydoras costatus, Orinocodoras eigenmanni, Pseudodoras niger, Synodontis granulosus (talk about paychecks), S mulipunctatus in abundance, a single S tanganicae, the small Syno's who are labelled njassee in the cat-e-log (wich aren't nigrita's but another species), a single Syno wich looked a LOT like Synodontis sp 4 (wich I find a very pretty fish), loads of L-numbers, Sturisoma's, Rhineloricaria's etc etc etc.
