"Snug fit around the male" is the correct size - it's very hard to say exactly. I don't believe they are picky. Cave needs to be big enough that the female can also get in there at the same time as the male.

My caves are virtually identical to E's. I used ceramic floor tiles having a stone finish.

Caves...Caves....Caves....It is a very important part of plecobreeding and plecokeeping but it is also something that cannot be 'standardized'...During the past years i have made tons of caves with different shapes, sizes and materials such as PVC,Granite,Slate...etc.
I have to admit that after so many caves and by studding my fish (Hypancistrus, Ancistrus, Peckoltias, Pseudacanthicus, Panaque and more) i can make caves for each particular specie with grate breeding success but the most important factor for me in order to built a cave, is to make a cave judging by each individual fish i have....
By that i mean that i am making caves based on each male fish, 'modifying' and 'tune' the shape and dimensions of the cave accordingly.
e.g.My male L183 always choose the safest cave and by that i mean the smallest available in the tank,in order to breed, but during non breeding times they use to hang on bigger caves. On the other hand my L262 don't care that much for the width of the cave but they always choose the smallest in height.
Another observation i have made is that my Panaques prefer more triangular shaped caves/cavities than a normal cave......and going on......

In conclusion, finding a suitable cave for your fish it is a matter of observation and "trial and error".Fish are living organisms and they have the right to choose the best for their home and breeding.

Always provide best water conditions and lot of different caves and let your fish choose what is best for them......
