Pleco for 55g
Hi I'm new here but I have been keeping fish as long as I can remember.I had a breeding pair of albino bristlenose in one tank and 3 young Panaque maccus I was going to try to breed, but I had to move and i stupidly forgot to test the new water and i lost them all.So now I'm going to be getting 55g (48inx12in) in a couple weeks when i get my tax's back.I've been hooked on pleco's since i got my first bristlenose a few years ago,and I want to do a pleco tank.I want to breed them.I really wanna get some L-134 but they are $40 each and I'm not sure I want to spend that much right now. Here is the only good fish store i can find within a couple hours of me http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/cat/inf ... tegory.web .What would you suggest out of the fish on that site.I was thinking mayb the L-270 or L-002?
Thanks for the help,Matt
Edit,I also found this store is not to far away http://exoticfinds.net/

Re: pl*co for 55g
Those are two very nice-looking fish for pretty reasonable prices, IMO. Either would be great, but in your case, I would make my decision based upon what temperature you plan to have your tank set at. The L-002 appears to like a sub-80 temp, while the L-270 prefers an 80+ temp. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but if it were me making the decision, I would go with the L-002...

Re: pl*co for 55g
There was a post about breeding L002 a while back. But breeding there is about the same as any other pleco - cool water changes, good food, plenty of caves, a male and a female, and that's about it.

OK,Thanks I'll look for that post.Is there any other species that would have the same need's I cant really find to much specific info on set up?How many would you suggest for a 55g? I also have a 29g , 20g and a 36inx12in (30g I think)that I could set up for fry if need be.MatsP wrote:There was a post about breeding L002 a while back. I was thinking about going to thatpetplace/thatfishplace but too long a drive for me,anyway you probaly could try breeding them.I like those but again I hate driving out there and I want to pick out my fish.Leopard plecs are pretty niceand are cave spawners,so it should be pretty easy.Plus they only grow about 4 inches,so they...

Yea they are about 2hrs from me but i cant find anything closer. I wanna get the leopard frog pleco but i would probably have to get 5-6 to make sure i got M and F and at $40 each and im starting college later in the year and probably shouldn't spend $200+ on fish right now,but maybe.hotsauce48 wrote:I was thinking about going to thatpetplace/thatfishplace but too long a drive for me,anyway you probaly could try breeding them.I like those but again I hate driving out there and I want to pick out my fish.Leopard plecs are pretty niceand are cave spawners,so it should be pretty easy.Plus they only grow about 4 inches,so they...

Re: pl*co for 55g
I would not describe getting L134 as an easy species to breed. The fry are easy to raise if you manage to breed them.
It seems to me that some of the Hypancistrus contradens, L201 and look-a-likes seem to be better "entry level" fancy dwarf pleco breeding candidates. I still don't for sure why I was so lucky getting repetitive and good sized spawns from my group of L134. They last spawned early last September but not one new fry since. I am only able to continue providing the same care and tank as last year and hope they are seasonal spawning fish about to begin again this March. I'm sure not counting any fry before they begin spawning again.
