Question About Growing Corydoras Frys !!!

Post by Callichthyidae »

Hello! Again Everyone :)
I have a seriously question about growing Corydoras Frys that I don't really understand. I've been bred some Corydoras Caudimaculatus and Corydoras Sterbai for almost half year, but I still cannot get them growing up completely successful. And I've been tried the best way to get them growing up completely, but it still doesn't work on me. But, I won't give up for sure, and I will solve my problems again and again. But, I find out one new thing that I don't understand WHY!!!, but I hope that someone can help me to answer this problem. :?:
After I could hatch some of my Corydoras Caudimaculatus and Sterbai Fries, I have been seperated them in my 10 gallons tank with a big Sponge Filter and a strong air pump. And, I always feed them with Tetra Colorbits and Color Spectrum Thera+A. I change the 40% water every two days, but my Corydoras Fries still keep dying little by little, but almost every single day. :?:
On the other hand, I have some Corydoras Fries in my Breeding tank as well that I didn't take them all out because sometimes when I've been picked up the eggs, and some eggs will drop down to the bottom of the tank and hard to pick them up, so I left them like that, and all eggs were hatched. And, all these Fries from the breeding tank grow up and never die that make me wonder WHY!!! Because my Breeding tank looks MORE DIRTY than my seperated tank that I grow up all my Corydoras Fries, and I change the water much lesser than my Fries tank, and I always never change for a week sometimes more, but all Fries in the Breeding tank never die. But, the Fries tank that I seperate I've cleaned and changed the water every two days, but Fries still keep dying. That's WHY I don't understand. Can someone help me figure out. It will be greatly appreciated. :?:

... my Breeding tank looks MORE DIRTY than my seperated tank
I've experienced the same thing in the past & after some reflection came to the conclusion that it depends on the definition of "dirty". A human looking for somewhere to drink from and a fish looking for food will give very different answers.

A sparkling clean tank will not be a good habitat for the little micro-organisms that fry like to eat. It will also (probably) not be cycled, so will be subject to drastic changes in water quality unless tended meticulously. If you overfeed the water goes bad. if you underfeed, the fry starve.

A "dirty" tank, on the other hand. likely has a healthy population of bacteria and bugs/micro-organisms busily eating the "dirt". As a result the water quality is likely to be more stsble. - (minor) overfeeding will result in an increased population of the wee bugs ( = live food for the fry) rather than a disastrous dip in water quality. Any short term under feeding & the fry make a dent in the beastie population.

At the weekend, I cleaned out the external filter on one of my tanks & found four 1/4" Corys swimming around inside it, happy as the proverbial pigs in poop. Believe me, the filter was "dirty" by any human's definition of the word.

Anyway, I'm not a biologist, so my explanations of the natural world should be treated with caution - but, that's the way I see it.

Thank you very much, M. :)

So, What I have to do? I leave my Corydoras Fries tank and do the same way as the breeding tank. Is that correct? I will try to do exactly the same way as my breeding tank, and will see what it happen. :?:

- Don't change the water very often. Change the water ONLY once a week or more, and so on. I will let you know, M.

Thank you again.

Are you breeding potato for McDonalds? In English, the word "Fries" means "Deep fried bits of potato". "Fry" is both singular (one fry) and plural (100 fry). [I'm guessing that you actually wrote "Frys" and the spell checker decided that's not the right word, and changed it to "Fries"] Enough of an English lesson...

As to "what to do", I think Torbanite got it right: Corydoras eat little organisms that live in the tank - insect larvae, worms, zoo-plankton and such things. Keeping the tank absolutely spotless in appearance is not the best way to keep lots of little microscopic critters around - a bit of dirt here and there won't hurt them. This is not the same thing as dirty water - you should change water often. Just don't suck up all the little dirt on the floor when you vacuum the water out.
