feeding syno multies
feeding syno multies
I have 7 new wigglers this morning in a tumbler. Instead of throwing the host eggs in, I'm going to try frozen baby brine shrimp to get them started. How long should I wait? Should I wait another day (day 5 counting the spawn) or should I start tonight? Tonight after work will be 12-18 hours after the tails popped out. I don't want to dirty the water up to fast with the frozen brine shrimp. Also, I have a couple of the hard plastic floating baskets. Will the cat wigglers get out the side slots? It looks close size wise.
Thanks,
Steve

but then that doesn't really answer your question as to when to start.Live baby brine shrimp are the favored food till the fry are about a month old, followed by chopped up live bloodworms from one to about three months, and whole bloodworms thereafter. The fry don't much care for flake foods, but will accept crushed Tetra ColorBits, which can be used to supplement live foods. As with all heavily fed fry, frequent water changes and waste removal are a must.

Re: feeding syno multies
Well for starters, I have 3 pigs and a runt left. I still don't have a hap. that will pick up the eggs. I'm still using an egg trap. It's similar to what you use for syno petros but it has a flat slate on top to get the haps/peacocks to spawn on. Since the fish wont pick up the cat eggs, they simply fall into the trap. They spawned on a Sunday night. I had wigglers Wed. morning. They did start to feed late morning Thursday. I'm guessing 24-36 hours after tails pop out, I'll start feeding.
Set up. The plastic floater baskets worked. The new wigglers were just big enough to stay in. They are alone, in a basket, in a 10 gal. To get the baby brine to them, I'm using a 5" piece of 1" lift tube. I set the tube over the fry and add the baby brine to the tube. The brine shrimp slowly sinks right to the little cats.
It's now day 10 since spawn. The 3 little pigs have good color on heads and fins and are about 3/16" diameter (heads) and about 3/8" long. Now when I put the tube in before feeding, they swim up the tube looking for food. It's fun to watch just how fast they grow. Like the articles say, there is no canablism going on since I started the baby brine shrimp early. We try to feed them around 4 to 5 times a day. the wife is home so she gets the mid-morning and afternoon feedings. I'm hoping to get them to dry foods in another week.

awww that's fantastic! I would love to see some pictures when you have time.
I have some lucipinnis in a tank to themselves so I will know now to start feeding when tails poke out if I am ever lucky enough to have fry.

Re: feeding syno multies
Nice surprise today. While doing water changes, I decided to catch the host peacock and strip any fry. She spit out 6 little syno multies! She never picked up cat eggs before, this is her first time. Three of these are twice as big as the three I had left from the egg trap. That makes nine little cats from this spawn. I can now say I officially spawned my syno multies the natural way. It's interesting to see how much bigger the cats are that ate eggs and not brine shrimp.
