Synodontis tanganyicae ?

Post by amiidae »

Hi guys,

I got this cat as Synodontis tanganyicae. Is it the correct ID ?

FYI, I started to have doubt as this fish is pretty slow or no growth over the past 9 mths under my care. :-S

It does not seem to have the long sloping forehead it should have and the spots are too large....I am still thinking on this one...anyone else?

That fish is abt 3 inch.

I believe the following 4 species came in as a batch :
Synodontis Dhonti
Synodontis Multipunctatus
Synodontis Petricola
Synodontis tanganyicae

Question for H.H., would you consider the papillae in the above pictures to be granular---flat,granular---villous

These can be confusing even after studying the revision quite a bit.(at least for me) :wtf: So I took my time coming up with an answer also hoping to get other opinions.

With the great shot showing the papillae on the head and body (which I would say are granular??)I would keep this as Synodontis tanganaicae for now...only thing is the spots are larger than I would expect, and need to get some growth, some of these cats can have slow growth depending on with what and how they are kept.

Sorry, nothing definitive from me...

I could always fall back on saying there could be more species yet to come out of the lake, but I also think there are also variants of the known species.

Mouth shots from the underside "may" also help.

Steve, What is your take on the papillae question?

The head looks granular to me but so is irsacae according to Wright & Page. The body seems to have some papillae in a few places and according to W&P irsacae doesn't have this so may be tang. If we can have a close up of the 'humeral process' to see if there is an axillary pore underneath it we will know for sure as irsacae doesn't have one whereas tang does.
