L114 Cactus Pleco Courtship Video

Post by PseudaSmart »

One of my pairs of L114's has been thinking of spawning for the past week so I set up a camcorder and let it run. This would have been my second L114 spawn but it was not to be. Both are fine but they did have a few interesting 'moves' that I caught on video. They are both +11", when I got them 2.5 years ago they were 4-5". The male is outside the cave with the black spot on the tail.

Here is the link to the video:

I might be mistaken, but that looks like a 'L600' to me... :-\

I wrote the post as L114 since the L600 number is not formally recognized. The video title is L600 L114 for search engines. You are correct that they both are the L600 variant.

Good questions! The tank is a 180gal (72"x24"x26"h). Besides the pair there are 2 abn's for minor algae control. There are 4 caves of slightly different sizes. All flare out wider about 3" from the opening. The cave they like this time has an opening 3.5" wide by 2.5" high. The total length is just over 12".

Update for tonight is that both pairs of my L600 have been again caving all day with their females inside. Perhaps false hope again. Any old school ideas to help them cross the finish line? I have tried water changes, temp changes, ph changes, peat water, lighting, water level, etc. As a last resort I am again going to Brazil next month so I will leave them for my wife to spawn again like last year!

Have a great day

Do you abns breed? I've seen some suggestions that keeping common bn may help trigger breeding; the pheremons from the bn may trigger breeding in other plecos. Otherwise, I guess wait for some change in weather and a drop in air pressure, etc.
