Synodontis petricola: how many to get?

Post by feesh »

I am getting a new 36 gallon bowfront, measurements: 30"L x 15"W x 21"H
I plan on making it all petricola :d ! How many adults comfortably will fit?
They will be purchased as babies.

I think perhaps the poster above was thinking about young fish without regard to adult size. I'd say 20 10cm adult in a 90cm tank is not a good idea. So, six max in a 30" tank. Less if you take into account that to get the most out of these fish they like dithers.

Assuming they are locally produced "babies", chances are very high that they are actually - they are nearly always sold under the label S. petricola name, since the S. lucipinnis are a relatively new species, described late 2006. Since both people and books are quite slow on picking up "new things", the old name is still widespread.

For all intents and purposes, the advice above about numbers, behaviour, information as to keeping/breeding, etc, these two species is pretty much the same. S. lucipinnis is slightly smaller adult size, but 10cm is a reasonable expectation.

Here's an article on how to tell the difference:
