Delphax, Melanistius, brevirostris Oh my!

Post by Vess »

Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance as I am sure this post has been done to death but I searched and checked the results of other threads and I am still non the wiser to which some of mine are. I was hoping you wouldnt mind giving an opinion so I can log them on my spreadsheet. :)

Am I right in thinking a main difference between the three is that has a spotted tail, squiggles or lines and is clear?

I suppose my question is ...How clear? lol.

For example, here is a fish I bought as Delphax 4 months ago.

Image Image

I assumed his colour was faded because of the journey etc but it never changed. He feeds well, fins up and alert so I do not think its a health issue but is his tail clear because of a lack of pigmentation as seen across the body or because he might be a melanistius? (or something else?)

This next fish was bought from a local shop

Image

- I have to own up and say I bought it as I am a sucker for weak cases - his tail is crooked. He recovered well and is happy and healthy. In the shop he was classed as Melanistius but is it really Brevirostris as his tail is pattered not spotted?

This next one - Delphax?

Image

Completely clear tail - melanistius?

Again sorry if this is a repeated topic, I would just love some input from people I do class as experts - compared to me thats all of you.

Thanks in advance

Lee

These ones are always tricky.
We can rule out - brevi (brief or short), rostrum (snout or nose). Your fish all have a longish snout.
2nd & 3rd do seem to be .
The others I'm not sure - perhaps

Hi Lee,

Good effort in trying to get the tags to work. However, you need to put the full species or common name in for it to work. e.g.

Code: Select all

[clog]Corydoras delphax[/clog]
gives .

Hope that helps and I agree with MM.

Oops

My apologies. I will know for next time.

Thank you for the help, both of you. Why are cory so infuriatingly addictive! :((

I will go and research now. (Hope that worked)- Definitely not Melanistius then?

It certainly did. It's not clever enough to format it correctly sadly! Corydoras (the genus) should be written with a capital and the species name not. Don't worry a lot of folks get that wrong.

Cheers,

Hi,

this is a difficult group of corys.
However, I do agree that 2nd is C. delphax and 3rd one probably as well but a deformed one.

The others could well be C. ephippifer but there are lots of similar ones. They can look completely different on dark substrates and fins that seems transparent suddenly have markings...

I would like to see them again when they are settled. Perhaps Ian knows better what it could be...

This is different one than yours (don't ask me what it is, I don't know for sure):

... and the same species again on dark substrate (what a difference):

Hello Steve,

that is also my assumption. But as on CW there was a discussion without a final result I use C. cf. brevirostris...
However, thanks for the confirmation.
