You only need a small breeding tank. Here a 40x25x25 cm 25 litre tank (for larger species as 12 cm use a bigger tank):



A female Synodontis:

(better use a gravid one - this fish has spawned one day before)

And a male Synodontis:

LOL this sounds so simple, I'll start pairing up my syno species tomorrow!

On a more serious note, nicely done! How easy are the fry to keep alive in terms of feeding and maintenance?

Did you have to play with the water chemistry or temperature to induce spawning?

Stephan Tanner uses a similar method using plastic sewing canvas. He uses it a lot for egg scatterers but as can be seen here, it can also be used for catfish.

The plastic is self made by my dad. He used it in the 1980s for breeding other catfishes. I have it stolen.

In this case it´s really easy. Feed them good with bloodworms and make some large water changes. Then they will do it.
The fry are also easy to keep alive. If they are all hatched i put a hand of sand to the tank. After three days i start the feeding with decapsulated brine shrimp, frozen Cyclops and microworms(right translation? i don´t know). Regulary water changes (best daily) are good for growing up.

I did not play with water chemistry or temperature. Temperature between 24 and 28°C are fine for the breeding.
