Keeping Synodontis lucipinnis with Japonica/Amano shrimp?

Post by Scleropages »

I'm about to break down my 90 gal rift lake aquarium to convert it into a marine tank. I'm going to give the mbuna to a friend, but I'd like to keep my in another tank. Checking the clog, I was surprised to see that they are okay with pH down to 6.5. My planted tank is usually around pH 7.0. Not sure what the hardness is, however, I know that our tapwater is on the relatively hard side. The Eheim filter on that tank has coral pieces in it and I have rocks that I collected from the beach in Nice, France in the tank which I'm sure also provide some soluble mineral content. So, I'm sure the water quality will suffice.

However, I have a nice population of Caradina japonica or Japonica/Amano shrimp in that tank. I have a feeling that if I put the S. lucipinnis in there, they will eat all the shrimp in a few days. Does anyone have experience keeping these two species (or another, similar shrimp) together?

I was surprised by the pH thing too, but I got F1 of this species from Hans Georg Evers who bred them at just below neutral pH. They appear to plain just not mind.

I suggest you should test first if you want the shrimp to survive...if any of the tangy synos would leave them alone it would be lucipinnis but I have serious doubts.

I agree the pH thing is okay as long it stays stable, no fluctuating.

When I have some time to observe, I'm going to try putting some shrimp and one or two S. lucipinnis in my smaller planted tank (which currently has no shrimp in it) and watch what happens. I'll report back with my findings once this is done.

I've seen clean out a shrimp populated tank. I don't think any member of the genus is a good "shrimpsafe".

Jools, I'm thinking the same thing. However, I might as well play scientist for a bit and experiment... once I can find the time to do it. If I knew the synos could and would clean the plants like the shrimp do, I wouldn't even be asking about this. However, those shrimp do a marvelous job keeping most of the algae in the tank in check and I'd like to keep that population intact.

If it doesn't work, it's no big deal. I have another tank the synos could go into. However, I think they would look great in this particular tank.

Thanks for the info regarding other synos and their shrimp consuming tendencies... which is what I would expect of most, if not all, of the genus.
