Sexing Clariidae: can we improve the Cat-eLog?

Post by Viktor Jarikov »

For instance, this is all that the "Sexing" section says on : Mature males have small spots along the dorsal fin; it is not known if this also applies to the albino colour variant.

I highly respect Oddball, the expert from MFK, who says this: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... 1-Viewing)

We are always looking to improve the Cat-e-Log.

Am I missing something, all I see is a venting diagram?

The photo below that is good.

Are you volunteering to put something together? :d

Thanks, Birger.

I guess, first, I am trying to understand if this is an expressed difference in opinions (whoever did the sexing sections for Clariidae vs. Oddball) or just that the Clariidae sexing sections have not been paid enough attenton yet.

The fact that something is written in these sections says that someone looked into this but then... if sexing Clariidae is as much more obvious as implied by Oddball's info, it leaves me confused and unsure why it is not mentioned.

Second, if decided by PCF that this info is valid and should be added, there is not much to be put together - the diagram applies to all Clariidae or so Oddball says and I can describe in words the diagram and send to you (?), although it'd be obviously the best to have it as one of the pictures on (each?) Datasheet and I can ask Oddball for a permission to use that diagram and the nice comparison photo of male next to female that he posted.

Just let me know, guys.

My starting position is, always, that there is nothing on Planet that cannot be improved.

I think the spot information is old, it predates the data submission/vetting facility and so it's been in the database since before 2000. As Birger says, some new text that can easily be applied at a generic level would be good. There is a lot of info on C. gariepinus out there, a breeding article and the diagram on MFK.

Adding diagrams to catelog data is possible but it would be better done with text I'd suggest.

Hope that provides enough of a steer?

Cheers

Yep, thanks Jools. See what you think of this description (trying to describe in words the diagram for all Claridae):

The genital papilla, which is right below the anus, is elongated and pointy in males while it is round and relatively larger (and larger than the anus) in females. In ventral view especially, females are much broader in the body than males of equal age and rearing practices.

You can edit it or insert it as is (for all Claridae?)

I have added this to all of the Genera of Clariidae now.

Thanks Mats, I am a little nervous applying this info to the genera of containing smaller species that we have never seen. No worries, I will vet as appropriate.

Forgot to mention that Oddball does not own that photo... he says he saw it on several web sites. So, "no go" for the photo.
