Synodontis Unknown

Post by ShadyCat »

New to this forum. Not new to forums. This site looks extremely informative and I thought all of you would be able to help. I'm a big fan of catfish, I own 4 very attractive specimens. My first two beauts are Raphael catfish, one is spotted and the other striped. My other pride and joy is a juvenile TSC which is about 14 inch also very nice. Ive been fishing for cats on local ads for a while and came across this guy. Its a synodontis but I have no idea what kind it is. Any help with its specific name would be appreciated. FYI extremely healthy and swimming around like it owns the place.

This is a hybrid, similar to the one sold as 'zebrinus'.

If you look at the syno hybrids in catelog you can see further examples

This individual is indeed better marked than most 'zebrinus' hybrids.

The problem we have is that we don't actually know for a fact in most cases, exactly what species are crossed to create hybrid 1 or hybrid 2 etc and if identical young are produced each time. Also if male species A x female species B produce the same as female species A x male species B ( like a liger & tigon for example).

Then we have the issue that a species (for example schoutedeni) is crossed with an F1 hybrid (for example a schoutedeni x angelica)

As much as someone is willing to pay for it...

The value of a fish is highly variable depending on who you ask, where you live, how it is being sold, and several other factors. I'd expect that if this was for sale in a shop locally, it would be priced around the £15-25 range (so roughly CA$22-38). If you want to sell it quickly privately, perhaps £10 (CA $15).

Price is always a contentcious & subjective topic & Mats is right, any fish is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

This is a pretty fish & will be attractive to many people. As a syno enthusiast, I wouldn't take this fish if you paid ME as I am strongly against hybrids for many reasons.

Hybrids tend to be much cheaper than genuine species as the costs to manufacture them are less than importing from Africa.

The same thing retails here for £8.95. I remember seeing them for sale when visiting an LFS with "@Marc can Arc". They are pretty.

I wonder if you'd like to take a few more pictures that could be added to the site? We're short on some pics of adults.

Cheers

The mother of this hybrid is , so as far as care goes, it would be best to treat it as this species.
