I think it will eat anything that is meaty and fits the mouth.
I wonder, however, whether I would spend much money on living food but then, would I have a load of fish @ 3-4 cm, I would not feel any need to kill them myself

Personally, I love to spoil my catfish, especially my asian bees.
I also strive to provide the most healthy, natural diet possible, so I do like supplementing with live food here and there. What they will eat and what they should eat aren't necessarily the same thing. I've done a lot of research on my bees and came across one good source with specifics.
From pg 106 of this PDF published by the Mekong River Commission, "It feeds on insects, aquatic insect larvae, including odonatans, fish and large crustaceans, earthworms, snails, roots, fruits and detritus."
So I try to stick more towards insect/crustacean based foods, since that seems to be a large part of their diet, and since most feeder fish available aren't actually very healthy for the fish they're feeding. For live foods, mine get blackworms and ghost shrimp, and, a very very rare treat due to how difficult it is for me to get them easily, earthworms. But I also feed a wide variety of pellet foods to help better balance their diet.
