Thanks Michelle,
Did you know...
Catfishes are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Catfishes species range from 1/2 inch (Scoloplax dicra) to 16 feet (Silurus glanis)
Catfishes range from living at an altitude of 14,000 feet to living in the sea.
There are over 30 families of catfishes (cichlid people, for all their talk, are still only dealing with a single family with a rather restricted range).
Catfishes practice nearly every means of reproduction known amongst freshwater fishes.

Fiskars,
There are planted spp. in Canada and maybe some in Alaska (I am not sure about it though). For all the cool things catfishes did, they never could cross the Rockies until humans took them over the mountains. This means that, besides Antarctica, only the western US/Canada is without any native catfish spp. Pretty weird if you ask me as they colonized South America west of the Andes. Maybe someone with a geology background could explain this better.

Hello,

A quick correction to the post regarding native catfish and a cute piece of trivia. Hawaii only has 3 native species. All 3 are migratory gobies. The remainder of their fish are all introduced.

Okay, maybe it is because I am on some serious cold medicine right now and things are a little foggy, but what catfish lives in the sea and starts with the letter G that lives in Alaska?

Also, despite their not being catfish, the coolest fish around my part of town are rockfish!!! I love rockfish of any sort. They are cool-looking fish!!! Even my license plate says ROKFSH. I shoulda got CATFSH but I didn't have any fish then.

It's found in the western Atlantic and parts of the Caribbean. That's not even close to Alaska.

It would be nice if Alaska was closer to Costa Rica. Maybe it'd be a wee bit warmer here and I could get some decent coffee. :D

I know! That must really confuse people. :) And we're the biggest state! But ask most people down south ("down south" is what we call any state under us because we're at the top!) and they'll say that Texas is the biggest state! HAH!

Michelle the point that Fiskars is trying to make is that you REALLY need to look at a map of the whole world and get some perspective for where Alaska is actually located. It's nowhere near Costa Rica.

No ill feelings, Michelle! :D Maps *do* always put us in a weird place. My island is right off the coast of British Columbia and about 630 miles away from Seattle. My boyfriend has had people ask him if we are off the coast of California (which is REALLY bizarre!!!).
