I bought a copy in Africa, but I'm sure a few catfish guys here have it too. The cover is different and it makes me wonder if it is actually the same book. I will check when I get home, but do you want me to post the publishers information?

This is the second edition of the book. It is basically the same as the first edition, except for a few taxonomic changes (e.g. Malapterurus shirensis for M. electricus).

I might add that the book is directly available form the South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity here.

how "South" is "Southern Africa"?
better said; is it everything south of the Sahara, or just Rift?
west Africa as well? etc

Southern Africa refers to everything south of the Cunene in the west and south of the Zambezi in the east.
West Africa would be all of sub-Saharan Africa to the west of the Niger.
The western half of Africa in between these two regions (including the Congo and everything to the west) is considered West Central Africa.
The eastern half south of the Nile (including the horn), is East Africa.
