Acanthicus adonis

Post by The-Wolf »

Hi all
I'm looking for the "true" adult size of a Acanthicus adonis. I have read so many sizes from 15cm to 90cm.
this site states 60cm.
is there anyone with personal experiance that can shed some light on this.

I'd love to buy one but my biggest tank is 48"L x 18"W x 24"H
if 60cm is the true size then he won't be able to turn around :(

[Could some moderator move this to the Loricariidae section].

Not personal experience, but others reported in the forum:

They DO grow big, and relatively speaking quite fast. They are also not very good "tankmates":

I would recommend looking at other pleco's, more suitable for home aquaria.

The one at work is about 18" not counting the tail filaments, so he's not a large one (I've seen them larger, much larger in pictures), and he completely dominates all the other Loricariids in a 1000 gallon aquarium.
Far better IMO in an aquarium the size of yours to go for a group of a much smaller species, that way you get to see social behaviour and hopefully breeding.
Keep an eye out for "Flash Panaques" (L something-or-other), they have all the visual attributes of young Adonis but stay manageable.

I wouldn't think that matches the look of a . It's much prettier - and definitely a more suitable candidate for the tank.

However, there's others that would look more similar - something with white spots would be a start [of course, most of the matches for this would NOT loose the spots as they grow - I see this as an advantage].

Just a few examples:

(also L240/241)

Some of these will probably grow a tad too large to be really good in the tank you've got, but at leas they won't be MUCH LONGER than the shortest side of the tank.

Thanks for all the replys
It looks like I won't be buying one untill I have a very big tank. What a shame as it is a really stunning fish.

I will go for a L128 instead

I hate how they have that guy in with rays....

A. Adonis Belong in meuseums. But like most of the other oddballs they bring in the cash so they are still in the hobby. Not to say that I am inoscent. :( But I'd definatly agree a mustard spot or Flash pleco would suite you better.

Good things come in small packages. ; or so I'm told
