Wondering which pleco to buy

Post by pleco_fan »

I have a new 55 gallon tank with no fish in it. After I cycle the tank for a couple of weeks, I was wondering which pleco would be best for the amount of space that I have. Right now I'm leaning towards an albino chocolate pleco. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I'm intrigued by the butterfly pleco. They don't get too big, they're reasonably priced, and they're pretty.

Are you restricted in any way on what your choices are? Willing to buy online or travel? Does you LFS special order? The reason I ask is because there are tons of choices but very few places carry a great diversity of them. Most of what I have seen are commons, sailfins, rubberlips, bushynose etc. IMO commons and sailfins grow a bit to large for a 55g, I would suggest a couple bushynoses. If you have access to more variety that would open a lot of doors.

I have a LFS nearby which carries some exotics such as royals and and galaxy plecos so I have some choices when it comes to selecting the right pleco. BTW what do you all think is the biggest pleco that can live comfortably in a 55 gallon tank?
