Cf means "confer", and is used to indicate that the species if SIMILAR TO, but not definitely, that species - it may be that it comes from outside the recognized area of the identified species, or it is different enough to say "it may not be this species, but it certainly looks almost the same".

So CF doesn't mean "See if" they are like others similar in appearance?

From my "piranha years" we always used CF as 'Complex Form' .....What do you think?
