I'm new here and, having looked at the cat-e-log, I can't see a difference!!

Can anyone enlighten/educate me?

Thanks in advance.

hey,

thanks for your input. i agree it looks like a l114 as the spots on its head arnt small enough or enough of them, however its 11-12 inch and on the catelog l114 only gets to just over 9"...??

i dont know what to think?
Thanks

This fish has just rang a distant bell with me.

I'm certain I saw one of these at world of water in Altrincham it was alone in a tank and I think they were asking about a hundred quid.It would have been about 11-12"

The thing is it stuck with me because I was in the company of my 3 year old who stuck his nose right up to the glass. The fish obviously got spooked and shot to the other end of the tank, which frightened the life out of him and he came running up to me crying his eyes out!

So I suppose you could boast that you have a fish which makes small boys cry!!!!

Spectacular, lovely fish.

The numbers in the Cat-eLog are by no means a guarantee of size - it is a "to the best of our knowledge", and they are "standard length", which means without tail. Most people measure the WHOLE fish, including the tail-fin. Particularly for undescribed species (L-numbers with no scientific name), the information of size is pretty sketchy - DATZ and Aqualog give some size information, but how accurate that is may be a different matter!
Cat-eLog L600 wrote:As juveniles these fish exhibit vibrant yellow/orange coloured unpaired fins. With increasing age the spotting of the body 'leaks' more and more onto the previously orange colored fins. Sometimes referred to as 'L600' but not recognised 'officially' as such by DATZ etc. It actually appeared in the December 1996 DATZ alongside L114. Wels Atlas II also equates this to L114.

Digging a bit further:
The info on L114 says that it's mostly from Rio Negro and Rio Rupununi, whilst L600 (the scientifically described species, thus will never get an L-number, I'd expect) supposedly come from Rio Rupununi in Guyana. I kind of believe that L114 is the Rio Negro variant, L600 is the Rio Rupununi variant. They are most likely the same species, but local variants.

You should be able to ask where it came from if the seller is worth his salt.

[By the way, I have no idea where the size of 350mm came from - fishbase lists it as 15cm TL!]

(L114) is from the Rio Demini (a Negro tributary), Brazil.

("L600") is from the Rupununi river in Guyana.

The cat-elog has this data back to front. Perhaps this post could be moved to the suggestions and bugs forum?

I have updated the text-records. I will update the body-of-water database when I get home.
