This is pretty much correct all round - even the species which are not in PC fail to meet your expectations

I used to have an all-black syno in that size range, but I never did know what species it was.

nope

the real dhonti is greyish with an irregular spotted or faded out spotted pattern and the telltale black and white fins
it is also HUGE. over 1 foot.

the small "dhonti" is most often irsacae and it has many spots

the polli gets very dark, true, but it's a distinctive brown color, like pure chocolate or very strong coffee.

I can recommend the polli, but only if you keep it in a small group of 4-6 fish. it likes to see speciesmembers around, despite being a bit grumpy and slightly territorial. the interaction is good for it.
it grows to about 5-6" TL.

the upside is that this is a very easy to keep, hardy fish that is compatible with almost any Rift cichlid, so it can be kept in a tank with the colorful fishes of Malawi or Tanganyika.
