Too cool, she (I believe its a she) is at 11''

Spent the summer in the pond and was just pulled in a week or two ago.

I thought the head shape on O. eigenmanni was more pointed, although I have to admit I've never seen a really big one...

This looks to be a Platydoras. Rounded snout, bigger eyes (comparatively).

11 inches is a fair old size.

As to it being costatus or not i couldn't say

When I first got her 2 years ago, First glance into the tank without looking at the head, her stripes in that tank was so dark, not as pronounced as now: assumed her to be a O. Niger (without looking at the head shape) - she was so dark until I started to notice her to color up over few hours in my QT tank into stripe and for the head shape I believe is a platydoras. Its too round to be any O species. . She was already 11'' and has not grown any bigger but her companion was 6-7'' now has shot up to 9'' as of yesterday when I did the measurements when moving them around the fish room. That smaller is now for sure 6 years old. The guy I brought both from stated that he brought her from another person and claimed that the bigger cat was over 12 years old so I'm going to be safely saying its really old cat is the correct guess. She is the boss of the tank and rules the roost over one other 11'' which was from a different person who said that it was over 10 years old. So its more likely to be the case.

I am going to try to get a big tank for them and have them coexist with the clown loaches as they're personally one of my favorite cats I've kept so far that can hold up to the clown loach mob. Right now they're being kept in a stock tub until I figure out what to do with them.

This is what I used to call a chocolate cat, I had one this size (well about 10") a long time ago, used to clean up at fish shows with it on it's size alone. The show standerd was 6" at the time.

(I always thought the size in the books of the time was probably wrong due to the lack of knowlage at the time, (1986' ish) we called it costatus...........also kept orinocadoras, (hell of a find back then) totaly different fish in habits size and colour as they grew.) Hope this is of help.

As you know I'm old school though. The new scientific names for stuff go's over my head when there changed,I still live in the past. You got it so easy with this site!

is that 11" TL or SL?

cause i've seen 11" TL Platydoras armatulus before, although back then we knew them as costatus.

it's definitely not eigenmanni; cause those have really tiny minute eyes.

when you see them side by side it's easy to see, but still

also: the eyes of Platydoras tend to be a bit cloudy or opaque, even in healthy
fish; those of Orinocodoras are dark and very clear.

then theres a whole list of more subtle differences, but the eyes are easiest.

I also have P. Armatulus at 11'' two different looking cats when next to each other.

I am keeping them in a stock tub so tank pictures isn't possible unless I manage to get a 100-125g tank for them which is looking dim at this time
