Syno Ornatipinnis?

Post by fishiechris »

Had these lovely fish for about 4 years and bought them as 1-2" fish. They are now about 8-9".

The closest I have to them would be ornatipinnis and I have just seen one for sale in a local shop that looks identical but had a good chunky price tag.

I am on the verge of giving these fish away but if they are actually ornatiopinnis I may find room for them or at least advertise them as what they are.

Any help would be great, sorry but the pics arent brilliant, took a bit of work getting them out of their hiding places in a 3 foot deep tank with one hand and the other with a camera!

Hybrids i'm afraid to say - and looking at the headshape of the 2nd fish, quite poor quality even

Thought they were based on price of them. Would be a difficult call to tell the better one apart from the one I saw in a shop today. Either that or a pricy hybrid at £44!

Definately not Synodontis ornatipinnis, there are a number of things but main thing is coloration is wrong should be dark grey bands on a light grey base...don't want to get into a guessing game but this may have some shoutedeni in it. It was not uncommon to see hybrids using the name ornatipinnis over the last few years.

and some hybrids have been sold for astronomical money at different times.

That said the last genuine ornatipinnis that i remember seeing were £85 each for a 4" fish
