Algae wafers

Post by French47 »

Hi to all, Please excuse my ignorance about this subject, I would like to get 6 Otocinclus macrospilus ( Macrotocinclus macrospilus ) I think I have enough tank algae growth to last a few days/ weeks then what? I see you can buy Algae wafers but note you must remove all uneaten food after 20 minutes, much as you would normally do. Does this meen I can only feed in day light hours or would it be OK to leave any uneaten wafers in the tank over night.
It might seem a simple question if you know the answer, but I don't, having never kept algae eating fish.

Fine to leave overnight. Oto's will eat all sorts of things and fresh/blanched veggies might be more manageable for you.

Different wafers will soften/break-up at different rates so some might be more suitable for you - from personal experience the Aquarian wafers hold their shape very well over long periods

Lou: It's still a three-way!

Thanks Richard, That is just the information I need, I will keep an eye on the Algae and when it looks to be getting eaten out I will get some Aquarium wafers.
Thanks once again.

I feed my ottos Hikari algae wafers, and I put them in just before lights out. Most of thee time, the wafers are gone in the AM. Good luck.

I use Hakari Algae wafers for my plecs and SAE. They don't seem to cloud the water at all. I find that you must be careful not to add too much in the beginning. I started with breaking a wafer in pieces and doing a little experimenting to find out how much they can consume in a couple of hours. Then my other fish got wind of them. Every fish in my tank loves the Hakari wafers, including my livebearer fry. So, nothing gets leftover for long.
