Large Spot Malawi Syno?

I'm assuming the Syno in this video is the large spot Malawi syno...wonder if this is a different species than the small spot? It's at 22:30 on the video

I thought the dead fish looked like a Bathybates to me. That would make it Lake Tanganyika.

If so, the syno might actually be the elusive

To me those are Malawi crabs and the cichlids swimming around are malawi fish...that syno is in good shape, what we can see of it.

Here is another cameo of a syno from a recent program called Croc Labyrinth from NatGeo.
The photographers were swimming through the channels and under the papyrus beds in the Okavango with nile crocs...slightly crazy!!

The syno does look like what we know as Njassae large spot.

Anyone know what has happened about further syno species being described from malawi? There was a post somewhere (ages ago)indicating that a second species was soon to be described. I understand it takes a good while for these things to get scientific community approval & this post has reminded me of this. When i get time i'll see if i can find who posted it.

Richard, were you ever able to find the post on the 2nd species of Malawi Synodontis? I recently purchased 6 of them after putting it off for several years. They're nice catfish but they are the small spot variety & don't look like the one pictured in this thread or the one in the Back to Nature Revised Malawi Cichlids guide.

I couldn't find it & wondered if it was indeed in a thread or in some email that someone had sent or cc'd me into. There are so many threads & it's finding the right combo of words to get exact search results. I moved to the point (which I think Birger commented on last time I mentioned this) that I think there may be 3 species of Malawi syno. The cat-e-log one (pics by sidguppy), the one shown in pics by Sands (CotW, Salamander) & the grey one which comes in large or small spot regional variations - even the amount of spotting varies.

Have you any pics of yours?

Scotcat has 2 pics: I believe the first is a hybrid & the other us a poorly marked specimen which looks to fall into the third type I describe above. From what I can remember, seegers pictures a 'type3' also. I will check when I'm home

I took some pics out of the water but they weren't very good. Once they settle in good I'll break out my better camera and get some shots. They look just like the fish in the link below, though. This is where I got them from. I agree with your assessment of the 2 on Scotcat. I put off getting them for a long time because I feared getting hybrids.
