This is a rare & beautiful fish, I'm sure they'll bring you immense pleasure. These look smaller than those I've previously seen. One slight word of caution: it has been reported these are boisterous and aggressive between individuals of this species (for a synodontis) & two is a bad number to keep as sooner or later one will dominate the other which may lead to problems. Is it possible to increase their number?
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

Yes they are stunning! Im actually looking into grabbing some more, i was surprised the smaller one i got was actually that small bc from what I understand they are all wild caught and most of the ones I have seen are at least 5-7inches.

Congratulation!!! This is a very nice and active species but as Richard said there should be more than two. Friend of mine have two of these at 100gal and they don't fight together, but there is also lots of other synos. At one time I had 6pcs of these at 190gal and aggression was at same level that has.

If possible try to offer them a large roots which goes top of the tank, I have notest that they like to "surf" up and down at root surface. Before I had them at rapid tank with lots of stones but they were not as active as they are with roots.

Jippo i couldnt help but notice how nice your Tilapia bythobates and the other similar Tilapia are that you have, how is there aggression? Do you have them in a single species tank or community?

Tilapia bythobates is a small species but dominant male has lots of aggression and is chasing all other fishes quite much all the time. Including all large species at my tank. I think it would be best to keep them at species tank big enough, I have kept them at 350gal and 415gal common tanks but I have way too much other fishes for this species at same tank.

Other red tilapia is Tilapia snyderae, I had only females of this species so I really don't know about their aggression level.

I'm keeping a group of 3 around 5 - 6 inches and I have not noticed terrible aggression although I have seen some scrapes on them from time to time. They are more active than many other Synos that Ive kept. They dont seem to be as tied to the bottom of the tank as most other Synos and I have found them hiding out near the surface in Floating hollow logs I keep in there for my African Cichlids to hide out in.
I'm planning on moving them into a slightly larger enclosure in the next few weeks. Mine were collected in the Ja River area. I was told its very hard to get there and that its hard to say when it will be collected again. They have great movement and are one of my Favorite Cats. There isnt a ton of info out there on them. This is a pic I snapped with my cellphone. Doesn't do them Justice, they are Gorgeous and are brimming with personality. One has even started hand feeding sporadically..

Did you get them from Daves Rare Fish in Texas?
